Four New Art Project Ideas for Grades K-6

14 Maj

Looking for new art project ideas? Here are four new (to me) art project ideas from my fabulous creative colleagues, Kelly and Nancy.

Kelly’s ‘Stained Glass

'stained glass' sun

Kelly’s ‘stained glasssun made with watercolors and black glue.

Kelly from Skyline School brought these beautiful ‘stained glass windowsmade with fluorescent liquid watercolor and black glue. Som et sidste trin, her students rubbed their artwork with baby oil and a cotton ball to make the paper translucent. Primary grades used a paper plate tracer to make the sun. Upper elementary made the geometric window (Bemærk: upper grade students used carbon paper to transfer their symmetric designs).

A New Twist on Monet

Kelly also brought these Monet water-lily paintings. Please zoom in on this paintingthe paint texture is so interesting. Kelly didn’t offer a brushher students applied paint with novelty rings purchased at Oriental Trading. These rings look like little sea urchins. If you try this, Kelly recommends pinching the ring instead of wearing it on her finger. Needless to say, her students LOVED this project!

30-Minute Color Mixing

Nancy teaches art at Solana Highlands School. She brought a color mixing project. Students used two colors plus black and white. After tinting, shading and creating a neutral, they drizzled black glue over the top. I love how much variety her students achieved. Some of these abstract compositions look like animal patterns. LOVE! Even more impressive: Nancy only has 30 minutes with her students. She does a lot of stations and table rotations to fit her projects in the tight time frame.

Kindergarten Paper Quilts

Nancy did these paper quilt squares with the kindergarten. The kindergarteners start with a 6square of paper. They collage first, then Nancy adds holes with a three-hole punch. Next class, the kindergartener lace the holes. Nancy glues the squares together into a quilt.

Som altid, I am FLOORED by my colleagues creativity. They always have interesting, challenging, beautiful projectsand they teach them so well. Thanks to Nancy and Kelly for sharing your ideas.

Clay projektideer fra Prag

17 April

Jeg kom lige tilbage fra Prag. WOW.

I think this would work for grades 4-6, and take around 45 minut -1 hour to teach.

Verdict: I showed my sample to my 6th grade helpers: they LOVED it.

czech clay owls

The Czech Owls:

These beautiful, textured clay owls were hollow clay cylinders with closed bases. A hole was poked in the base to keep the owl from exploding in the kiln.

My version of the Czech owl:

I started with two pinch pots, stuffed them with newspaper, and sealed together to form a cylinder. I smoothed the cylinder by rolling it back and forth on a board. Next I tapped the bottom on the board to flatten. Finally I wiped the cylinder with a damp sponge to smooth it out.

I textured the clay, and added wings and a beak. I would have liked to have some different texture stamps for the eyes….still, they turned out OK.

Verdict: min 6. klasse hjælpere troede mine ugler lignede pingviner!!!

Nå, spring break was awesome but it’s over. Back to work!

Notan for femte og sjette Karakterer

20 Februar

notan for 5th and 6th gradesVores 5. og 6. klasses elever gjorde en hurtig 40-minutters cut papir notan collage projekt. Our inspiration came from these beautiful notan artworks at the MiniMatisse blog. If you are unfamiliar with notan, it is a Japanese design concept of dark and light. Notan cut paper projects are great for teaching a lot of concepts including contrast, positive og negative rum, symmetri, and geometric vs. organiske former.

This was the very first time I taught notan. I found two really good resources that gave me confidence: 1) a great video that shows the notan process and 2) a great illustration showing single and double cuts.

Each student started) with a 6square of red construction paper and a white format (baggrund) papir . The minimum assignment was to make four single cutsone cut from each of the square’s sides. Double cuts were optional (about half the students tried them). Cut pieces could be geometric (hearts were popular) and/or organic shapes.

Our students really liked this project. Some made Valentines and wanted to take them home immediately. I think they turned out great. I also think that their second attempts will be even better. Definitely a project to repeat!

Fifth and Sixth Grade Results:

more notan

notan valentines

notan names

The next two designs contain cut pieces that were rotated incorrectly. But you know what? I consider the artworks successful. They are beautiful designs, even if they don’t fully fulfill the assignment. They still illustrate the concept of positive and negative space although they are in places asymmetric.

not notan

Although we did these red paper notans in honor of Valentine’s Day, they will look great displayed as a group any time of year.

I would LOVE to find an iPad app or interactive website that illustrates notan. If anyone knows of one, du efterlade en kommentar!!

Nyd!

Have you even tried notan with your students?

Do you have any tips to share?

Tie Dye Snefnug

tie dye snowflake collage 3

Giv dit snefnug projekt en farverig twist – ‘tie dyethem! Sixth grade just finished their tie dye snowflake collages, made with coffee filters and painted with tempera cakes. This lesson was inspired by dette indlæg at A Faithful Attempt blog.

Sixth graders cut and paint coffee filter snowflakes, then use them in a collage. Allow two 40-minute classes.

Sixth graders cut and paint coffee filter snowflakes, then use them in a collage. Tillad to 40-minutters klasser.

Dag 1:

We began by viewing all the excellent student examples on the Faithful Attempt blog. Næste, we folded our coffee filter rounds and cut our snowflakes using this method. BEMÆRK: DO NOT OPEN THE PAPERS AT THIS TIME! Students painted their folded snowflakes with tempera cakes, then clipped on a numbered clothespin.

Students were allowed to make multiple snowflakes, so long as the folded flakes could fit stacked up in a single clothespin. One student was able to fit three painted snowflakes in a single clothespin. I let the papers dry on a sheet of cardboard.

Label each snowflake with a numbered clothespin.

Label each snowflake with a numbered clothespin. If you have multiple classes, use a different colored number for each class.

Dag 2:

The sixth graders carefully opened their papers. THEY LOVED THE RESULTS! They mounted the snowflakes on construction paper using glue stick (tip – glue down the center first and carefully work your way out to the edges).

I was going to stop the project at that point, when someone asked me if she could double-mat their work. Then someone asked me if he could make a decorative border. I pulled out the ‘fancyscissors and the scrap paper bin, and gave them free rein. Our snowflake project turned into a collage project!
